Pub promotions may lead to higher rates of violence
By Staff Writer
Happy hour-style drinking promotions at pubs have been linked to an increase in violence, according to the results of a recent Cardiff University study.
In the study, a team of researchers examined pubs and nightclubs in five different cities and towns in the United Kingdom. Each of these establishments also had a history of violence. Data on drink prices and promotions were recorded, and patrons entering and exiting the premises were subjected to a breathalyzer test.
This information was then linked to police and hospital reports related to incidents that occurred both inside and outside the establishments. The researchers found that the highest levels of violence were associated with pubs and nightclubs that had price promotions on drinks and the biggest change in customer intoxication levels.
Based on these findings, the research team believes that pub staff have a responsibility to stop heavily intoxicated patrons from continuing to drink. Slurred speech alone was shown to be an accurate predictor of inebriation.
Increased diligence on the part of workers at these establishments would lead to a healthier and more enjoyable pub experience, according to the researchers.
An individual whose addiction to alcohol is leading to violent behavior may want to seek substance abuse help.
