Marijuana use may harm male sexual performance
By Staff Writer
An estimated 97.5 million Americans aged 12 and older have tried marijuana at least once in their lifetimes, according to the National Survey on Drug use and Health. However, new research reveals that cannabis use by men may have a negative impact on sexual performance.
A recent review, which is set to appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, analyzed medical literature pertaining to cannabis use and sexual health. Based on the findings of recent animal and in vitro studies, the researcher behind the review found connections between marijuana use and sexual dysfunction.
Cannabis is known to have an effect on specific brain receptors. However, new research shows that similar receptors are also found in the penis, and may respond negatively to marijuana, causing a man to have more difficulty achieving and maintaining his erection.
Past studies have delivered mixed results regarding the effects of cannabis on male sexual function, with some research saying that marijuana use can enhance erectile function.
Despite these past results, the researcher behind the review believes that these new findings will lead to a better understanding of the hazardous effects cannabis can have on sexual health and performance. Individuals who wish to stop using cannabis may want to seek substance abuse help from drug rehab facilities.
