According to a study published on the British Medical Journal website, Scotland has a higher mortality rate than either England or Wales, and substance abuse accounts for approximately one-third of the deaths behind this statistic. Traditionally, the higher mortality rates in Scotland have been attributed to poorer living conditions and any unaccounted for deaths were assumed to be the result of conditions related to deprivation.
