School Changes can Lead to Teen Drug Use

Kids are heading back to school soon.  And for some, the increased pressure to do well and “be popular” may prompt them to experiment with drugs.

Every change in grade level, coach, friend or teacher may also contribute to stress, which can lead to experimentation with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, said Michelle Morse, communications director for Drug-Free Action Alliance.

Those most at risk are students who transition to new school buildings in middle school and high school, she said.

“We see that statistically speaking, the older a child gets the more exposure there is to alcohol and drugs,” she said. [Source: Journal-News]

Morse encourages parents to be involved in their kids’ lives, know their friends, and know what they’re doing after school.

This is so true! My daughter was a good girl and grades were great until this year when she started her 8th grade year! She had NONE of her friends in any classes and the teachers are hard on them at this age! So she got hooked up with the wrong group of kids at school! She know these are not the kids I would allow over so it was only happening at school! We staring see her grades drop and attutide a lot! But was unable to pen point it until this morning when I walked into her room and she was in her closet on the floor....I asked what she was doing and she said she was getting dress but sitting on the floor....so I walked over and smelled something and yes she was smoking "POT"! So now I know where all the attutiude is coming from! Now I going to fix it!So please keep a good eye on your kids and dont think for onces its not going to happen to you!

I would add to the recommendations that a parent talks to their kids about healthy ways to cope. It's not just "saying no to drugs", but rather giving teenagers (and people of all ages) a way to cope with their lives so they don't go down the path to addiction because they felt they had no other way to deal with life.
